The number on this card is active, in that you get a recorded message which is unnecessary for solving the card. In that respect it is exactly like Bar None. Where it differs is that the Bar None number directed you to a website. This one doesn't (yet). Let's go through the possibilities for the number: Mistake: Number was never meant to be used. Change-of-mind: What I think sloth007 is suggesting - the number was intended for use, but MC decided against it. Not-ready-yet: The number is meant for future use - my own guess. ARG, anyone? Active: The number is already in use, but no-one's worked out its purpose yet. I mean, has anyone actually tried leaving a message? |

Thank you, You correctly figured out what I was suggesting. I must admit I never tried the number, just took the advice on the solve page not to call at face value. But this is intriguing. sloth007 |

I'd dialled the number before I saw the warning. I'd like to claim that it was the ARG mentality of assuming a phone number or e-mail address was there to be used, but in reality it's just that I wanted to confirm the answer before going to the solve page.
Meanwhile, the plot thickens. From looking through Perplexorum, it appears that the PXCPD number has been given out by MC previously - about a year ago, and didn't appear to be being used then either. This makes it even more puzzling why they used a real number on the card. Why not create a fictional dialling code for Perplex City, or use the old Hollywood trick of a "555" number? At the very least, it looks like MC are trying to keep their options open... |

I guess all we can do is keep an eye on it- especially when PXC Stories starts up. I only just got the season 1 Bar None card- felt like such a nit trying to ring the number, i was so relieved when it was intended to be dialled!

If its the same one I still have in my phone from when it was used last year Spoiler: (highlight to read) 02081332265 then it most certainly was in use for a time - we used it during one of the live events to ring in fake crimes to distract the police so we could get into their system. rach =) |

It is the same number - thanks. It looks like the poster at Perplexorum must have been mistaken, or else forgot about that event. So this does appear to be a phone number which MC holds in reserve. |

And as the whole premise for the ARG seems to be solving a murder, and the number is for the PXC Police Dept., I guess that it may be used somewhat like the Crimestoppers number.
It's just a thought MC!! |

The message on the solve page asking us not to try it seemed a bit desperate...
The Perplex City Police Department is not currently looking for volunteers. Please do not call this number. No, really, don't try it - it doesn't work So I tried phoning it just now. It does work (it rings for a long time, then goes to voice mail). I left my name and mobile phone number just in case, but will probably try again in a few weeks as the ARG warms up. |

There's a website in the outgoing message now, saying that the police thing is wrong and directing his fans to www.twinkleboi.com, but this doesn't seem related to PXC at all. Looks to me like this poor guy's number was just used for the card.

you could have dialed the wrong number... it seems like others have done the same thing, and this dude got annoyed with it and therefore made the message you talked about:

The answering machine message has changed since my last post on this thread. It's been mentioned on Perplexorum that this is a Skype number, and (I believe) the answering machine message we were originally getting is a default one. My guess is that MC let go of the number between the card design and its release. Then some time after the start of S2, the number was reassigned to Twinkleboi, who can't understand why he's being bombarded with applications to join the police force! This all goes back to the question of why use a real number on the card, and not a "555"-style fake one. Either it was an error of judgement (the number had been used by MC in the past, so the puzzle architect assumed it was "safe"), or else MC were planning to use it again in the ARG... |

Yes, I think that it should've worked.
Especially since I tuned into the game far too late to hear what the Bar None card's number said. |
