Hint:

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

How many jelly beans can you possibly pick out while still not even having 3 of each colour?

of course, you need to make an assumption that different colour equates to different flavour for the jelly beans.

This question was a lot harder before i reread the question. I thought they wanted 3 of a specific color.

This may help:

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

What is the MAXIMUM number of jelly beans that you can take out WITHOUT having three of a kind? Play out a scenario in your head...it'll work out.

Hmmm....I think I'm missing something.

Let's take the scenario that the jar had eight different coloured beans in, ie eight beans: Then there would never be three beans of the same colour.

The only time this could occur is if there were 24 beans in the jar, three of each colour. Then there is the possibility that 21 beans could be pulled out before the next three were of the same colour.......

Gawd...this is sending me mad.....

If you were to do that you may end up with something like this:

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

112233445566778812345 (each number representing a different colour...

....therefore more of each colour than necessary...you simply need ONE colour that has three colours...and it doesn't matter which colour!

Good Luck

First of all, by "large jar of eight different flavoured jelly beans" they are implying hundreds or possibly thousands of beans are in the jar. We don't know how many but we do know there are 8 different colors (assuming each color corresponds to a unique flavor).

Second, they want the number of beans you need to take out "to be certain of getting three of the same colour". They don't need to be taken out in a row. The three beans can be taken out at different times.

Once you get that straight use the previous hints given and I think you'll see what the answer is.

Rumour has it there is a magic eye puzzle on the bottom half of the card.

I've tried magic-eye-ing the bottom half - pretty much nothing. Some of the pattern matches up, some doesn't, and the part that does doesn't come up with anything.

And if none of the above works, try this...

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

If each number relates to a diferent colour, then the minimum number needed would be 3 - as in 111. However, as there are 8 colours, if we assume that we pull out beans in a specific order (eg 12345678) folowed by the same order again (12345678) we would only have two of each colour.

Therefore...

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

the next bean drawn will match one of the pairs making a three.

Well....I thought I could see a "3" but then it turned into a cloud and then became a bunch of bubbles.

I don't think there's anything there apart from my overactive imagination

What I see in the bottom half:

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

If you use the cross your eyes method (er, just look at it and cross your eyes until you overlap two repeating pieces, like the vaguely heart-shaped ones) then something definitely pops out. It looked like a bag, like you get jelly beans in, to me, but it was hard to focus on, so maybe it's just a random thing.
