The mose annoying thing about this one is that every one of us trying to solve it has either looked through about twelfty sites with the key to the answer; or it's something so random & annoyingly simple we've missed it 4 times in a row...
Starting to think a Degree in Bio-Chemical Engerneering would have been a good idea... On a slightly more productive note; i do think it reads down, but short of randomly cobbling together words that are the right lengh; altho if that is the case; and the answer is another question, it might make this first bit look easy..... Dunno if it's been mentioned before; but i just stumbled upon this site: Spoiler: (highlight to read) http://www.ebi.ac.uk/~roman/gel_together.html |

I think a11420151425 mentioned that he'd created this on the first page:

Ah fair enough; sorry it was damn late / early when i posted that; i think now it's nearly 21 hours awake i should call it a night / day & think about it tonight / tomorrow morning...
Sometimes i think they took people working nights into consideration when they made these cards; am i the only one that's nearly done something that could get ya fired because they're concentrating on a card?!!?? |

Ok, I'm finally looking at this card since I've solved all my others. Well, except 13th Labour, but we won't go there.
I've looked over what everyone has done here, on Unfiction, and Perplexorum and decided to take a different approach. Seems efforts with ciphers, codes, and the like haven't gotten anywhere. I really think there is a biologic angle to this card, so I read about ligands and the biochemistry. Ligands bind to proteins, so I tried to find a database where I could find out what proteins these ligands bind to. I eventually used http://www.bindingmoad.org/moad/search.do. On this site you can plug in a ligand and get a list of proteins that is binds to. What's better is that it also links the protein to a lifeform, and has links to taxonomy sites. Most of the ligands on the card are found, in fact some link to multiple lifeforms. I really feel like this is getting somewhere, but I haven't found any patterns so far. I've looked at names of the lifeforms and what they are. I've attached an Excel sheet with the species names and common names of what I found. I'm going to start looking at shared proteins and other items, but I hope someone out there has time to look at this too. This is one tough nut to crack and there is a lot of information here. I guess the next step is to

hi everyone, i know the forum is dead near enough, but i have come across this:
http://pass.maths.org.uk/issue46/fea...ics/index.html haeckel's "tree of life", thie pic seems to have the same form as the table on the card, and the obvious "tree" connection, although i cant see any other connections with the ligands yet. let me know if this is helpful. Also, there are 20 rows in the table and on the pic of the tree, it can be seen that there are 20 branches |

A while back I thought about some kind of taxonomy tree, but couldn't figure out how to link it to the card. Maybe this article will help. Worth a try. Thanks for sharing. Good find.

I've been hunting around and found the following two links.
The first is an article about using a ligand to purify antibodies. This contains a image of an electrophoresis gel to do with the experiment. This experiment used Invitrogens Mark12 protein standard marker. This only has 12 marks, however the table we have has 15 rows. After a little more searching of the Invitrogen website I found that they do a 15 protein version called BenchMark. So I'm thinking that the grid represents something to do with using those ligands on some (possibly 3 different) biological substance and then running the gel test using the BenchMark protein ladder. So the top line (BR, ALF, BMZ) would represent a result at 220kDa, and the bottom line (with only ABH) would represent a result at 10kDa. This means it would represent the results of several gel electrophoresis tests together on one grid, hence Gel Together. Now all I need is a degree in biochemistry and I might be able to work out what is being done with the ligands before each test. |

First off, good find
trk wrote: Now all I need is a degree in biochemistry and I might be able to work out what is being done with the ligands before each test. That's one thing I'm always thinking about when I'm researching stuff. I go down one path, but then it gets to a point where you need a PhD to go further, and I doubt the puzzle designer would require that. I keep getting stuck trying to find a path through all this complex subjectry that only requires some intelligence and good Google skills. On that note, I did some more fiddling with taxonomy and the tree of life, but didn't get far. I like the tree idea because of the background art of the card, but there are too many possibilities. I'll take a look at these new articles and see if there is any way to link the two. |

Congratulations to Makadabo who's managed to solve this! (Actually, this could be why Mind Candy have decided to release Wave 2 now.) | |||||||||

I think the official line is that if you send a suggestion makadabo will confirm or deny whether you are going in the right direction... (understandably, given the leaderboard positions). (I think I read this in some thread somewhere, makadabo)

Quite right!
The existing thread contains all the ground work and necessary conclusions. I am happy to answer specific questions. I will add that I had mentioned to a friend who was struggling with this card that I thought Kurt was likely a fan of William of Ockham. |
