in simpler terms, its looking for a number that, when you reverse the digits, then double it, then take away 1, it equals the original number.

more hints
an easy way would be to use excel (or another spreadsheet program).
try

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

creating four columns
1) a list of all whole number (1,2,3...)
2) a list of those whole numbers next to it, but with its digits reversed (e.g. 12 becomes 21)
3) a list that doubles the 'reversed' number
4) a list that adds 1 to the whole number and then halfs it.
Where an entry first matches in column 2 and 4, this should give you the answer.

I hope you have some luck

does this mean

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

that the number cannot be one through 9 because they can't be reversed?

They can be reversed but they would become themselves so would not fit the rule.

Took a while....

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

I decided on an Excel solution as well, except my formula was slightly different. Got there in the end though!

Post-message discussion:

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

You can skip a lot of numbers due to simple logic. For example, when you get to 23, reversed it's 32, which is already much greater than 23, let alone doubling itt etc. Same with 20-anything greater than 22, in fact, so that's 8 numbers skipped right there.
