Can someone who has cone this card clear a few things up for me.
1) Does the cycle go back to whistle 1 (all open) which means every 3 whistles all the lookers are open? or... 2) does it just cycle through the 2nd and third whistle? and 3) If a locker is open already and the student is asked to open it again does this mean they shut it? and 4) does the minimum number of students have to be greater than the previous year? Its quite a lot to ask but i am going blind looking at rows of O's and C's and I already wear glasses!!

haven't answered this card but i've been working on it as well.
i understood from the card that cycling through 1-3 was the way it worked but came to the same conclusion you did in #1. i'm gonna assume (probably to my detriment) that your second option is the way it's supposed to work. as for #3... i've got hte card in front of me and it says that on the second blow every second locker is closed, on the third whistle every third locker is changed from open to closed or closed to open. So maybe.... (just in case) Spoiler: (highlight to read) whistle blows first time and every door is opened. whistle blows second time and every second door closes. third whistle every third door changes then on the next whistle only every second door is opened if it is already closed and we go back to every third door changes.... not sure but i'm going to give it a go. Not that I have any real idea of what i'm doing in a more practical way. theory I can handle, practical... well, let me know how you go or what you think

I interpreted the question differently to that, but my answer was incorrect. I thought
Spoiler: (highlight to read) Whistle 1 - all lockers open

I actually tried that and Spoiler: (highlight to read) ended up with them half of them open and no way to close them. does anyone know how to get hints other than on the forums? |

The sequence that Hugmonster outlines is correct.
A few hints (they get bigger as they go down): 1: Spoiler: (highlight to read) "20 years ago" means that 20 full years have passed since the tradition began. So you should be able to work out whether we're now in year 20 or year 21 2: Spoiler: (highlight to read) The first whistle toggles lockers whose number is divisible by 1. The second toggles lockers whose number is divisible by 2 etc. So take, e.g. locker 20, you can see that it would have been toggled on whistles 1, 2, 4, 5, 10 and 20 (i.e. the factors of 20). 3: Spoiler: (highlight to read) All lockers start closed, so you can work out that only a locker which has been 'toggled' an odd number of times will be open. 4: Spoiler: (highlight to read) Try and work out which number lockers could have been toggled an odd number of times (i.e. which have an odd number of factors). It's only a special kind of number... |

OK, I confess, I am completely utterly lost. Any help for a math dummy? (I have an idea of what's involved, just am clueless as how to actually do it)

It helps if you use something you can manipulate. And, remember to count CORRECTLY, particularly when you start getting into higher numbers.
Spoiler: (highlight to read) It also helps to remember the most stable shape in the cosmos. |
