I'm a bit stuck on this one as I simply can't read music. Anyone have any idea of what this piece is?

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

I'm working on copying it into Sibelius - i'll upload a midi file to my webspace for those who want a listen.

Plus, reading music wouldn't help too much. It's a snare drum rythmn, so its a beat. I'm assuming we have to work out what piece it's from - but i've got no clue where the title of the card comes into it..

Good work Whiternoise!

I have a feeling the title of the card will become more apparent once we have an idea of where the music comes from. Perhaps the artist or title of the piece? I'd be gratefull if you could let me know once the MIDI file is up.

At first I thought it was morse code, but rather than having two note lengths for dot/dash, it seems to have at least three.

I'm vaguely familiar with musical notation but not with drum notation. I found out that it's standard 4/4 time and those quavers with a double bar through them indicate a drum roll (and not a demi-semi quaver like I first thought).

Looking forward to hearing that midi file.

I'm not a drummer so excuse me if this sounds stupid but how do you play a minim with a snare drum without making it a drum roll?

Hi,

This one is really bugging me too!

I don't know what reference the 600 meters is but cadence is just another word for rhythm or beat. And the guest architect is a British racing driver known as "Speedy Dan".

It kind of implies race music to me, but I've already had Fleetwod Mac's "Chain" rejected (it's the Formula 1 music), so it's back to square one!

I am a drummer, well a percussionist really. I am stumped by this card too.

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

A minim without a roll sounds the same length as a crotchet. So, if you have a 4/4 bar with a crotchet, followed by a crotchet rest, and then another crotchet and another crotchet rest, that would sound exactly the same as a bar with two minims in it.

More musical puzzles please!!

Potentially misleading hints from a music student...

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

A cadence is a point in music where chords form a sound like a musical comma or full-stop, to put it like my music teacher would! The the ones that sound like full stops are perfect and plagal (plagal sounds kinda like the amen in church music and a perfect cadence sounds like the piece should end) and the comma sounding cadences are imperfect (sounds just like your voice when you "read" a comma, kinda like a tuneful pause) and interrupted (they sound out of the blue, literally interrupting the music). I don't know if that helps as it's a rhythm rather than a melody but never mind. I'm stumped.

Oh and also, a meter is another word for a tempo, i think. It tends to be used more on music tech software.

But like I say, I'm stumped.

Just some thoughts ...

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

If 600 meter refers to the tempo, then would this be an extremely quick rhythm?

Does anyone know any famous musical pieces that involve prominent snare drumming? I thought of Bolero, but this is quite slow and was rejected anyway ... any ideas?

At 600 bpm the drum rolls would sound like a long buzz, and the single notes as a tick. Almost as if it were .....
