Hey,
the other day I picked up a copy of World Of Puzzles magazine (I'm not sure how widely available that is outside of the US. It's made by the editors of Games Magazine, something that I've never looked into.) Anyway, they had a section in the middle about "new Japanese puzzles" that've debuted over the past decade or so. It got me thinking: does anyone have any other similar logic puzzles that they like outside of the Sudoku/Kakuro/Hitori/Bacarba/Ponturu/Cidouri stuff that we have here? I'm not too familiar with many others of that style, but the magazine did introduce me to one that's growing on me. They call them Tatami Mats. You have these square grids that need to be divided into smaller grids based on symbols within the larger grid. |

There is also Godoku. Same principle as Sudoku but with the letters A - I. For some reason it seems much harder than Sudoku, although it shouldn't be.

I love Slitherlink and Light-up. I probably wouldn't have discovered these puzzles myself, but fortunately, they were part of a Brain Training game for my Nintendo DS console.
Anyway, you can try on-line versions of these puzzles at the following links. Warning: they can be frustratingly addictive!

Slitherlink, nurikabe, and nonograms are my favorite. Nonograms are also called paint-by-numbers and was the basis for the DS game Picross (awesome game btw).

Plus there were Game Boy and SNES Picross games, and in the UK they are published as Hanjie in a monthly magazine named Hanjie and a bimonthly magazine named Super Hanjie. They are also in the Sunday Telegraph's Seven supplement, with the name of Griddlers. |

I've had a couple of PMs asking me what DS game featured the puzzles I mentioned. If anyone else is interested, the game is called "Brain Busters"...

Yeah I bought that game too, I was surprised that it had both slither link and nurikabe. Lights out was pretty fun too. I think the full name of the game is "Brain Busters Puzzle Pak". |
