I'm not sure about that

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

It looks to me like these are describing notes to play on a trumpet, the mouth piece on the left may indicate amount of pressure (or whatever it is that varies the note with the same valves), the valves are indicated including what looks like a thumb valve underneath.

So I think this may be a tune that you need to identify.

Anyone here play the trumpet?

Well i dont play the trumpet, although i do play a brass instrument (which tells me the above may not just be trumpets but cornets, not much difference though)

If we are lookinf for a tune then it will probably be a simple one since the note range from two different combinations of valves is quite small.

Im assuming Bb instruments here, i dont know Eb.

So 0 valves down - low/middle/high C, middle/high G, middle E.

1 valve down - low/middle/high Bb, low/high F

And i cant identify the bottom parts on some of them, there is no such thing on a standard cornet/trumpet

No... No I really cant help

I got this card through more "What is the most obvious answer?" than "Let's work out this cards secret!". I guess thats me spending too much time playing arcade games again

I think the card has a "trick" of some sort. It feels slightly sticky and the aliens have a different texture to them.

However, heat/cold/reflections/throwing it around/pretending to tear it up have had no effect. Can't try UV unfortunately but unless its well hidden (unlike some of the other cards) I can't see anything.

Solved, lmao. This is just one of those disappointing solves where the answer is so obvious yet linked loosely to the pic.

I am convinced there is more to it though, as cronogenesis says. both puzzle architects have done other puzzles in perplex city and they have always been decent in-depth puzzles.

Here are my thoughts so far:

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

I'm wondering if each of these things is a different type of trumpet. I need to do more research, but it looks like trumpets come in different sizes. Even if the same valve configuration is used between two types of trumpets, a different note will be produced. Maybe this means this whole thing does decode to music.

Of course I'm not sure how the different circle and flare shapes play into this...

I'm going to guess that this is not a cipher of some kind.

It would be nice if I could guess the answer so I could try reverse engineering the question, but all my attempts have been rejected.

Anyone care to give me a hint as to what the answer might be related to?

You will really kick yourself when you get this one. I think this card is supposed to hint at a very famous computer game, then after this you should guess it. Just think sci-fi, what do they always seek?

I should learn to qualify my hint requests with what I've been trying. I was actually going this direction, but apparently can't quite figure out the right phrase. I'll PM you for more details.

Well, knowing the answer isn't really helping unravel the mystery, but I think I have made a bit more progress:

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

I'm working from the trumpet angle. In my research I've read that longer trumpets are lower pitch, blowing with the lips wider apart make a lower pitch than with the lips closer together, and that all three valves up is a higher note than the first one down. Each "alien" has a circle that varies (which could be the mouth), different lengths, and valve positions. I don't think the size of the flare a the end matters since it seems to go along with the length.

So, putting this all together we can figure out the pitch of each "alien" relative to the others. I don't think there is any way to figure out the exact note (like B flat, A, etc..), but that probably doesn't matter. It's the relativity between all of them that matters.

And my current progress (contains reference to actual answer):

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

Unfortunately, I'm stuck at the pitch sequence. It doesn't really look like a normal musical piece. Since the real answer is a planet, and there are classical pieces named for planets, I was thinking that this was a musical representation of that. However, there doesn't appear to be any such piece.

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

Maybe this is somehow related to Gustav Holst's "planets" suite

That was my first thought, but

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

The known answer isn't represented.

I suppose it could be a reference to what's missing, but that seems overly obscure to me.
The music reference seems difficult enough, and this is "only" a black...
