They have the answer...

Must be at least something to do with

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

smarties...

Or is that too obvious?

Not obvious for me. I didn't know that was their slogan.

This explains why the title is in quotes.

Oh, and in case it's too hard to see in the scan, the center circle is connected to the "02" circle.

Ok, my initial observations:

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

Firstly listing the groups:
There are 8 Yellows numbers 1 to 7 and the letter P
26 Orange which are the numbers 1 to 27 except 25
6 Reds each 2 digits long and 74 is repeated.

The 02 on the Reds is odd so I'm thinking that the Reds are a year i.e. 1973, 1974, 1974, 1985, 2002 and either 2025 or 1925. This could make Oranges and Yellows some other date reference (day & month or week & day of week). But why are the Oranges missing 25? And why do the Yellows have a P instead of a number? Is this some sort of calendar?

I've checked those years against Smarties (I too remembered the advert slogan) but didn't find anything.

Despite not having this card...

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

I tried smarties when the answer website first went up, purely because I clicked on the card at random to look at the answer input system and had a quick guess!

Woowoo!

I dont think this needs spoilering but let me know if anyone disagrees!

trk - there is an orange 25, the 25 that seems to be red is in fact the culprit. If you look carefully you should spot it is a different shade to the others.

The reds and 25 are interlinked, and just to repeat, the 02 is linked to the green AP?.

Thank you for confirming that. I thought it was different, but the longer I looked, the less sure I was.

Ahh, thanks, I really should have got my real card out and had a look at that shouldn't I?

For the record, the answer isn't...

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

Blue or Blue Smartie.

(I wondered if the puzzle was about the Blue Smarties that they removed for a long time due to Artificial Colouring. Now they've found a way to make it with Natural Colouring, it's part of the Smarties packet once more.)

Right, thinking more about this. How about this for an idea?

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

Each number could be a letter. 8=P for example as a starter.

27 numbers in the orange section is a bit odd as we only have 26 letters, but considering the green is 'AP?', the 27th could possibly be a '?'.

Then, just perhaps... reading the letters in the order of the numbers makes a phrase. This probably isn't right as not many phrases use all 26 letters in the alphabet just once. Maybe the oranges correspond to a code which enables the reds to be read in a circle, leading to the green question?

Or the reds could maybe two letters together?

Worth mentioning hopefully.

My other idea - does anybody know any board games with this layout? Smarties are easily interchangeable for many board game counters.

Smarties are a terrible idea for board game counters - they don't last long enough.

Anyway, I can confirm also that the answer is neither Spirulina nor seaweed, which was the answer to the problem of finding a natural and acceptable blue dye for the Blue ones after they were removed and then reformulated as a "natural" product.

It was worth a shot I suppose and this is part of what I love about these cards - the stuff you get to find out...

The layout sort-of seems right for a game of Chinese Checkers, only that uses a 6-pointed star instead of an 8-pointed one.

Just had a thought. Probably nothing, but it might get someone thinking.

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

Could the shape represent the "Starburst" chewy sweets, formerly known as "Opal Fruits"?
