Very annoying - I'm sure I have a valid solution but I'm locked out.
Can someone who's solved it tell me whether you have to put in the initial a8 square that the Queen is on, or do you start with the first capture - b7 or b8?
The solution I have worked out ends at...

yes, as far as i can remember, the a8 is needed, i cant remember the solution but there is only one so if you have 5 pieces left you have the correct solution

My error was to forget the final piece I'd used!
There seem to be loads of ways to do this leaving 5 pieces AND the last piece you used. Finally I've managed to get down to the one solution where four piece are left (plus the fifth which made the final capture)

Well I've spent hundreds of hours on this, not to mention 84 sheets of A4 and I have four routes that end up with the 5 pieces plus the last one you use, however I think I have exhausted every route and haven't come up with the correct solution. All of the 4 routes leave the same 6 pieces.

Is there any chance of a hint, to save me having to go back and check it all again, I've really used far too much of my holidays on this already. Perhaps letting me know which other piece should go or a clue to the start of the route so I can narrow down the possibilities a bit?

I guess this give me more reason than ever to try and write a computer program to figure this out. I don't think I have enough paper in the house otherwise.

Another 5 sheets of A4, a tip from AndyAndyO and a few more hours work and I've finally solved it. Thanks Andy.
