Re: Bugs

I just got 109 on Slamboozled, but noticed a few bugs on the way there:

- In the 'Which colour triangle appears the most?' puzzles, the answer is always blue, even if it's not correct.

- Very occasionally I got questions that didn't make sense because of a lack of context, e.g. the question of #H04. In this case, there was only one option to choose from (and it was correct).

- I also got the question from this What comes next? puzzle, but it was incomplete due to line breaks after every number. I only got it correct because I'd solved it previously.

Feel free to remove my score if you think it's unfair! :) But not to make my first post sound too negative, I do love the site, and I'm looking forward to what's still to come!

Yea, the same thing happened to me - I'd logged in early in the day (being in the US, the Mind Candy day is a bit off from me), did the daily puzzle, then logged in late that night to find there'd been a reset, a new Daily Puzzle, and me 25 points behind.

Several of us conjectured that the leaderboard would be reset when S2 went live, but even a day's notice of forewarning would have been nice.

Re: Bugs

Regarding the dropdown bug- using firefox allows the entries whilst IE does not- I was using IE7 (I wander if IE6 would have had the same problem?)

Also- On the machine where I used IE7 and then used Firefox, drop downs still didn't work- I had to use my laptop which only ran Firefox.

Not being a tech guy I can't explain why there is a difference, but at least cards can be entered! (and maybe it will help MC in ironing out the bugs...)

Slamboozle seems to be... well, very buggy. May as well list...

1) What mikej said, images are taking a while to load, though not so long as his are taking.
2) If you get a puzzle wrong in the play mode, it always, without fail, turns up first on your next game. I don't know if this is intentional, but it's happening.
3) Tangentially related to 2, the same puzzle seems to give wildly varying percentages of people solving it each time, especially when it comes up at the start again.
4) I'm sure I'm not the first to notice, Slamboozle scores are being recorded without screen names.

Bugs

Don't get me wrong, I think that everyone is doing a super job and it's great to see the bugs being fixed quickly. This is a major bug though and ought to be high up on the list. I'd never expect anyone to work 24/7 on getting the teething problems sorted, just think that delaying the launch by another week or two to have thoroughly tested for bugs and being prepared for the great unveiling would have been in everyone's best interests. Nevertheless things are up and running so we have to just put up with it.... hope you can put up with the frustration some of us are feeling.

Keep up the good work!

Bugs

Agreed, this thread definitely is the place to inform the Mind Candy of any problem with the site. However, most of the bugs (especially the IE/Firefox related ones) have been well documented this week-end.

So even if you all have a point, it might be wiser to save this thread for new bugs from now on, so as to keep the thread readable for the tech crew, don't you think ? In the same way, try not to "clutter" this area too much with non-report posts : do feel free to take it to PMs and messengers, but it's important that this thread can be easily used as a tool.

(Which also means that if you agree/disagree/need to react to this post, I encourage you to take it straight to my PM box !)

Firstly this doesn't seem to be the last message in the thread (it puts me on p6 instead of p7). But - if I click on the p7 link at the bottom, some of the posts on the page I saw are also present on p7.

The page links at the top go 15, 30, 45, 60 - so presumably that 80 should be a 90, not an 80?

Re: Bugs

Thank you Mastercheese for your insight.

The thread was read thouroughly, prior to post.
The post was meant as a reminder, as I have myself mentioned this before, and was simply suprised that after other IE bugs have been dealt with, this one hasn't.

Please be careful in your new role of moderator, not to let it go to your head and 'over moderate'. There is such a thing as play-on and it often results in a better time being had by all. It is simply a case of being judicious.
Admittedly I was a little concerned to see that MC had accepted a person whose first post on the introductory thread said something like...

Remember me, I have gained a reputation in the chat rooms for jumping on people.

...and then proceeded to get into an argument with another player.

Not the best of qualifications if you ask me. However, if you can show good judgement and self control you will prove my initial misgivings to be flawed.

Please take this as the kindly advice it is meant to be, and not as the initial salvo of some silly arguement. I will say no more on the subject.

Thank you, and all the best with your moderating,
Sloth007

Are the daily puzzles that you've solved showing up here?

I'm missing 215 points. If it were 175, I'd say it was my puzzles of the day not registering, but as it stands, I have more cards points from solves than points in my profile. (NOTE: This has been like this for a while now so it's not a matter of things not getting updated. I have solved cards since noticing the discrepancy and have received points for them. I have no idea which 215 points are missing.)

Perhaps everyone could check their totals and see if there's some specific cards or something that aren't set for the right amount of points etc...

Edit: Perhaps I'm only missing 190 points. According to my solved puzzles list, I missed a daily puzzle (even though I remember doing that one).

I solved today's daily puzzle, but the problem is that I solved it a while back, before it was picked as daily puzzle. Now I can't get points for it, because when I solve it again, it doesn't register, due to me having already solved it!

Are these points gone to me forever? It would be nice if there was some way to get daily puzzle points for previously solved puzzles, even if you have to solve them again on that day, since otherwise you're limited to one a day which is Never Enough. (The post office is being intolerably slow with my puzzle cards.)

Also, I'd be unsurprised if this is the problem you're experiencing, UKver2.0.

In awarding the extra points that people were missing from the Daily Puzzle on March 1st, when the leaderboard got reset, some people gained an extra extra 25 points, which have since been adjusted... sorry about that.

Hi there,

This is how it has been thus far. In S1 you could run through the pages and find where you were, in relation to those around you.

As far as I know (and that's not very far) in S2, unless you are in the top 20, you only know what your position is from your profile.
I would love to see who is on the same leaderboard page as me, may be things will change soon.

Are you sure those Cidouri *really* exist? This may be a bug with the next button - going to puzzles that don't exist at all.

There are times when you are trying 3 answers on a card (ie Gel Together!!) and you get a message saying "Too many tries in 24 hours" but it doesn't really say whether the final answer has been accepted / rejected.
In other words, it would be useful to know if the last answer has not even been checked because it was within the 24 hours!

On the old web-site, it wouldn't even allow you to try it a fourth time - you were automatically locked out.

So does this mean that if I have happened to do a puzzle before and it shows up as the daily puzzle, if I solve it, I won't get the points? Because I solved the last 2 daily puzzles but didn't get any points for them. Yep, the only thing it won't do is show up at the top of your Solved Puzzles list, or add one onto your Solved Puzzles count. Because it's already been counted the first time you did it. You should however notice a points increase.

In my preferences, I chose not to receive an email when someone PMs me, but I still get the notification emails.

I have had the same problem with some old links in the forums and with the user created puzzles thread.
I posted a message in the social suggesting that people change the address of their links so they work for all users.

Free Cards

Here's a suggestion that's meant to help Mind Candy: Put a few free cards on the site, like the old Season 1 site had, to spur interest. I got sucked into the game by solving the two free cards.

How about 3 or 4 free cards? Or perhaps one of each color? Maybe there can be a free set of eight cards (they'll have fronts and backs, just like regular cards, but you can explore both 'sides' on the site, and they are given away at events) that don't duplicate the cards in the packs but do give you points.

This is a suggestion not a bug. I've copied it over to the Suggestions thread (link)- Rotek.

I'm a relative newcomer to Perplex City and have been going back and working on Season 1 cards. I've tried for several days to submit an answer for card #87 and the form does not seem to be working. It will not transfer the "steps" from the first box into the second, so it is impossible to submit anything except for a blank box.

I'm on a Mac and usually use Safari, although I have also tried (and failed) to have it work in Firefox. I've never had a problem with the forms for any other cards that I have completed - this is the only one. Thanks!

Re: Bugs

I wanted to create a new puzzle, but when I uploaded the image, it appeared corrupted. I've tried this with Firefox and IE, in GIF and JPG formats, but the same thing happens. It appears as though each time, the upload is aborted part way through.

The crazy thing is, I've even tried to re-upload the images I made for my previous puzzles and they appear corrupted too, though they obviously did work first time round, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see or solve the puzzles.

EDIT: I just uploaded a test image and did a screencapture of it, to explain what I mean. On the left is the image I'm trying to upload, on the right is the image as it appears in the preview panel... (The only thing I've altered is the size.) This happens with every image I try.

In addition, I've just realised that the latest puzzle submissions - 8502 onwards do not display any images.

EDIT: I've just managed to upload a puzzle! I had to degrade the quality of the original image until it was 32k in size. There is still a problem with image uploading, but at least you can work around it. However, if your image is realy colourful, forget it!
Re: Bugs

Someone I know contacted Mind Candy about this bug in November but it still seems to be an issue.

Certain cards (the one that isn't working for me is 033 of season one) produce "Unknown error" messages (not invalid ID; this is something else) like this:

(Click for bigger picture)

Also, the help email that was given (website-errors@perplexcity.com) was an invalid address; it just bounced.

(The picture is old but I get exactly the same error message today at timestamp Thu May 29 06:29:32 BST 2008 and every time I've tried it since November.)

Come on, guys, I knew the answer to this card within a couple of seconds but it's taken more than six months and I still can't input it!

Firefox Fix?

Since upgrading to Firefox 3 I get the following messages when loading a puzzle or Slamboozle:

Movie content could not be loaded

Anyone else experiencing this problem? Or even better, know how to fix it?

I seem to have all of the same Add-ons installed that I did when I was running Firefox 2. And everything worked fine then.

At the moment I have to use Internet Explorer to do my puzzling...

It's funny you should say that, I've been having the same problem, but only at home. The system I use at work (same OS, same Firefox 3, same Adobe Flash for Linux) works fine. I haven't been able to track down what the difference is yet.

Re: Bugs

I'm having the exact same issue with the daily puzzles (the flash games don't work either; I just get a blank window).

I've had FF 3 for a few months now and no issues previously; my Flash player is also up to date. I'm running Noscript and Adblock but have WLP allowed on both so that shouldn't be the cause.

ETA Jan 8 2009: Viewing the page source shows that the proper code for the game is in there (directly under the "this movie could not be loaded" block), I'm not fluent enough in Javascript to figure what the exact problem is.

So: WinXP Home up to date, FF 3.0.5 and can't see any puzzles; the problem for me seems to have started on Jan 5th. Does everyone else have similar specs?
