"Puzzles Solved" Leaderboard

Hello all. Here is the latest (9 June 2008 ) 'Puzzles Solved' leaderboard of all those registerd with welovepuzzles.com who have solved at least 500 puzzles. The last column is a 'to date' column of solves since my records began on 17 February 2008. Puzzles solved this week (of those on leaderboard): 5394; to date: 62876.

Excellent work Doublecross, it certainly gives me the incentive to attack some Slamboozles for once, as opposed to relying on the cards and DPs. Will this be updated fairly frequently? I think Rotek ought to sticky this one as well.

It's wonderful. Thanks for putting this together. TIP: If you want the font in the code box to be bigger, post it like this: [ size=12] [ code] Put the leaderboard here [ /code] [ /size] *I've added a space after the brackets so that it wouldn't just translate the tags. Do not include the spaces.

Thanks for the comments, and the stickification. I will try to update regularly, but I can't seem to get the script to work again at the moment! Is the font size OK now, UK Ver 2.0? X9Tim - the different alignments are due to tabs, yes. Must correct some time. Sophiecat - you are on the list already (although perhaps I *don't* want to include you :wink:)

Early on there had been some suggestion that if you had already done a puzzle and then it came up in the DP, then you wouldn't get the points. So I didn't bother just in case. Only ones you haven't done appear in the list... as you complete them your list will empty until you have nothing in the list.

You don't automatically get the points if you previously did the DP, but you'll get them if you do the puzzle again (when it's the featured DP). Almost all of my points have come from non-Slamboozles. (I've finished all of the Cidouris, Hitoris, and Ponturos)

How do you get the list? Is it the list of 10 that appears whenever you click on a puzzle type?

I think that's what they mean when they say list. It should be noted, though, that not all puzzles in the archives appear in this "list." Some really interesting and obscure things show up when you try to systematically work your way through the puzzles one at a time (this both applies to the puzzles made by Mind Candy before the Japanese style puzzles, and also to user-created puzzles that begin listing after the japanese puzzles (and now, with the addition of Moshi Monsters, after all of the Moshi Monster puzzle challenge puzzles which are in our archives but easily playable.) Oh, and don't forget that the Ponturu puzzles never seem to load up when you just go to the Japanese Puzzles section. For some reason you can't get to Ponturu unless you click on their section (at least, that's how it's worked for me.)

Also, make sure you don't ever use the "next" button after solving to get your next puzzle. It will just pull up the next puzzle sequencially even if you've already solved it.

I've corrected my latest list (there were some repeat entries, sorry) and have reconciled with the previous list - see the first post. You can see at a glance who the obsessives are... Not sure how to portray this over time - puzzles solved since records began as well as puzzles solved since previous list? Suggestions welcome.

Why not create two new columns for that data? "Solved since previous" with +0 (or probably higher) and "Since start" with +0 (or probably higher)?

Script to tell you what puzzles you've solved

Here's a Python script I wrote that will tell you what puzzles you've solved. I was getting tired of getting on a roll, only to find that I had already solved half of the puzzles. Learning Python is also one of my many projects to do, so I figured this would be a good opportunity. Since I am a Python noob, this isn't the greatest script and doesn't have much in the way of error handling, but it gets the job done. To run, you'll need to install Python (http://www.python.org/) and the Mechanize (http://wwwsearch.sourceforge.net/mechanize/) library for your system. Then you just need to run from the command line like this:

python SolvedPuzzles.py   [filename]

where "username" and "password" are your username and password. "Filename" is optional. If it is present, the output will be written to that file in CSV format. If it is not present, the output will print to the screen. I hope you find this useful. I may clean it up a bit in the future as an exercise, but we'll see.

Here's a new version of the script. I fixed a bug where some puzzles would be excluded, and added the capability to tell you what puzzles you have not solved (it will also ignore that large block of missing puzzles from ~8600 to ~19000). The script will only output to files now, one will tell you the puzzles you've solved, the other the ones you have not solved. To run the script now use:

The new leaderboard is up! New features: I have now mined PXC for all usernames, so this is now a true leaderboard of all those 60,000 or so who have registered usernames - hence a few new names sprinkled among the list (surprisingly few, though). News: a change at the top for the first time! Cabbage goes down a place despite solving over 300 puzzles! Addicts of the week: What_ and beaker_muppet.

Yup, thought I'd exhaust the puzzles I had left... that's it (for now until some new ones appear), I've done all the ones I can. I'd better get back to looking at Gel Together and Thirteenth Labour then... or try and find someone to swap with for the ones I'm missing... But I'm now in 5 figures for puzzle solves... something for every one else to aim for. PS Andy, you've more card solves than me, you should be able to overtake me, just.

None now, but some of the Moshi Monsters ones are "solvable". You don't get a picture, but then you don't get a choice of whether the answer is right or wrong. If the first answer is the correct one then no matter which answer you choose it will say it's correct. You just have to plough through the several thousand puzzles to find the ones that will give you a solve. It's a pity they've not been added to slamboozle, then it'd be possible to solve all of them. BTW, my fingers now ache after all that clicking pressing buttons.

Wow, well done! OK, - by my reckoning the new DAILY points record stands at 1621, set today by trk ... there's a challenge for anyone... I'll see what I can do, but I suspect it'll not be beaten! The trick is to preload all the pages into tabs in the browser and then work out the right combination of mouse clicks and key presses to select an option, select "Check Answer" and close the tab. It's possible to hit a rate of just over 1 attempt a second (probably around 70-80 a minute). With a 1 in 4 chance of getting a correct, you can hit around the 18 solves a minute mark. There are some sets of Moshi puzzles that are biased towards the first answer, so that gives more chance of getting over the 20 mark.

List of all Puzzles

Behold, the list of all puzzle names and their associated numbers. The results of another Python programming exercise for me. I'm glad this isn't something that I'll need to run again since it took quite a while to finish. This is a straight CSV file of the number and the name. I figured people can pull it into Excel or whatever and sort/filter the data as they see fit. Oh yeah, this list does not include the actual puzzle cards (I was too lazy to figure out how to parse those HTML pages for the info), but I don't think that's much of a problem for everyone. Anyhoo, enjoy.

Thanks volvox! This week's leaderboard is up, and trk has regained the crown in spectacular fashion, being the first player with a five-digit score, and having solved over 1500 puzzles in one week. Thanks to volvox, we know that trk has fewer than 1000 puzzles to solve (although they are probably most, if not all, insoluble). Other addicts are (ahem) myself, SUPERMAF and Roark. MD1500 has also gone up 46 places.

I went through them this weekend, most of the ones I have left are "unsolvable" moshi monsters puzzles (in the range 19209 to 23460). The others are a few of the early puzzles (in the 500's and 600's) that are unsolvable because they either don't have any entry fields, have the wrong entry fields or in the case of Tri*ominoes won't accept the right answer. Oh! I have just "solved" tri*ominoes or at least with a little deductive reasoning (game of mastermind anyone) worked out what answer it would accept. The "correct" answer certainly isn't. So if people send me a private message with their solution, if it's right solution I'll reply with the answer that will be accepted. Edit: I've also got 4 out of the 6 artists for Sixfaces, not bad considering there's no picture.

It looks like trk was mistaken about the number of Moshi Monster puzzles that are solvable. I'm still plodding my way through them steadily (a bit like tortoise and hare - slow and steady wins the race!) BTW, this thread is the only reason why I or anyone else would ever want to plod their way through so many unsolvable puzzles! So there's still hope for others to leap up this leaderboard if they stick at it.

I believe I have exhausted all the MM puzzles. I may have the odd Slamboozle ones to complete and a couple of others I haven't solved yet. Some sections of the MM puzzles appear to ALL be solvable, which might account for trk's missing quite a few in his rush-job. (Don't ask me which types of puzzles they were - just make sure you're very thorough when you go through them!)

Either I can't count or I changed the wrong digit when I was going through the MM puzzles. I've, so far, found that I missed some of the LetterSlices puzzles. I'm hunting for the other ones I missed now... Edit: Yup, it's just the LetterSlices that are all solvable. They're the only MM puzzles that actually give you a choice of answer. Right, I'm pretty sure that I'm maxed out now.

Did you two solve the Slamboozles just by trying repeatedly and hoping you got the ones you needed, or did you have another method to hit all of them?

Some of them you can do by going to the perma puzzle link for the puzzle. As long as the first answer is correct it will let you have it (no matter which answer you actually pick). The rest you'll have to do by playing Slamboozle.

I just Slamboozled, but now when I get over 100 I usually find my score doesn't go up any so I reckon I've done them all.

New solved/unsolved script

Here's a new version of my solved/unsolved Python script. I was able to remove that Mechanize library I was using to connect, so you no longer need to install that you get it going. Just get yourself a copy of Python from python.org or activestate.com, and you should be ready to go. Runs just the same as before. Hopefully this will make it easier to use. I know installing Mechanize was kind of a pain.

I'm thinking that What_ has probably found some way to load the Moshi Monster puzzles into Slamboozle, judging by the very regular high-scores pattern that is emerging on Slamboozle and the fact that he's gone past my score with fewer card-solves. He's now threatening to top this leaderboard before the next one is posted. Perhaps when he's overtaken trk he might share how he's done it!

Following on from that, i've just checked the top slamboozle scores for today. At the time of typing this all 10 high scores are either 22 or 23 and all are timed between 8.30 and 10.30 this morning. Strikes me as a little weird, what could be the reasoning behind that?

It does seem a bit weird. Perhaps it's one person who is just really into trying it, but always goes to check to see how many new puzzles Slamboozle added to the solved score after 20 or so? Not likely, but maybe.

Andy, I'm not so sure. What_'s hit a plateaux around your score. He's only getting a few solves now per day, and bear in mind that you should be able to reach 11630 solves at present (you've solved 15 more cards than me). I think you just need to work on those slamboozles you don't have. For those interested here's my puzzles solved list.
